This is a Bontei,or bonseki set which comes in Bontei-tansu dated around early 1,900s to 1,940s.
This exceptional set is collected by man in Osaka who has been enjoyed bonseki for a long time.
Bonseki is the creation of miniature landscapes on rectangular or oval black lacquer trays.It is made primarily of sand and stone,pebbles,and bonseki sceneries are like three dimensional paintings that seem to mysteriously pulse with the movements of nature and carry both artist and viewer into an inner depth that belies expression which started around over 560 years ago.
12 drawers contain beautiful different sands,rocks and many pieces to creat ocean,also a sieve of large mesh to fine mesh to design oceans and mountains and other small tools are used all natural world.
This tansu istself is finely made using the best part called Tamamoku,rings of jewelries,so they have gorgeous wooden grains and nice cresent shaped handles on both sides.Inside of tansu are devided nciely with charming pulls.This is a site which explains about Bonseki and tools in English.

As you see from pictures,incredible part of this set is that it comes with SOOOO MANY tiny figures in 7 wooden cases!!!!!!!!!!!(it is impossible to count all,so we don't know how many they are)
ALL people have wonderful facial expressions,and there architectural figures,animals,even skeleton,badger,rabbit,and sparrows in human figures,and a lot of monkeies(there are many kind of trees,so might be used with them?).It is impossible to tell this amazing arts and some come in super tiny sizes with faces(smallest figure is littel bigger than tiny rice!) and needlesss to say,all pieces are made by hand carefully.
There are nice pictures of various sceneries which are probably drawn by man who used to to own this set.
This set is beyond imagination,so PLESE enjoy every details on more pictures.
Due to age and use, featuers are mostly gone and some sands got mixed with other sands and because of weight,the corner of tansu and the drawers are getting separated and having fine hard wood,door is warped and lockplate came out and it can not be closed and some metals are rusty,and many parts of figures are chipped(some broken parts are in the boxes and most of legs of horses are damaged),and some flaws on the tools,and outside case of tansu is damaged,BUT considering these fragilities and rare pieces,they are in great conditions.
Representative examples of Karasansui(rocks and sand, with the sea symbolized not by water but by sand raked in patterns that suggest rippling water)are in the gardens of Ryoanji Temple and Daitokuji Temple,both in Kyoto and you might be able to make similar one in your house,and the best part of it is that you will get the best meditation while making it and after making it for sure!
