This is a Ryougae-hakari,money changing scale dated around 1,800s(year is written on the back of drawer, but it is hard to read it,might be older than 1,800s).
From around mid.Edo,the goverment had services to change money and deal with general banking business which are exchanging, loaning, clearing, saving and made income from these handling fee.During Edo era, there are koban(an oval gold and silver coin) which had face value, but there are some small coins called Cyo-gin and smaller one mameita-gin which don't have face value and come in various weight,so this scale was mainly used to weight suming up these small coins.Putting weight on one tray, the other is used for silver coins. This construction is really breath-taking.Joineries including all drawers are done with dove tails, specially all corners on the body have shapes like trianlges. The thickness of drawers is about 2cm(about 5inchs) and the front woods are even thicker than the sides!!!The scale is made of 3 wooden bars which get separated and can store neatly on the second drawer and the back of it is finely cut-out to store the longest one perfectly. 2 trays and brass bar with wonderful tassels for scale are perfectly fitted into the top drawer which are cut-out the shape of these and the brass is made in full details and gorgeously hung in the middle. The lowest
drawer is to store handsome 22 different weights. Most of scale don't come with weights and weights themselves are really highly valued. There are handsome pulls and handles on the sides.
It comes with addional accessoried related to weights(not sure about the small wooden bar with sticks on top). There are some information written on the back of drawers.Again, this consdtruction is a piece of work which you can feel Japanese finest carpenty during Edo era!
Due to use and age(this is seriouly old!),it is worn out adding great aged patina(if you don't like this look, you can probably stain or wax to make it shinier) and there are some scratches, chips, cracks, holes, and metals are rusty, and originally,it must have been lacqured, but coatings came off,but considering the age and use, this is in a very good condition.
This supreme antique will something you really enjoy!!!
*You can probaby stain or wax to make it shinner if you want.
