This is a kakejiku, hanging scroll with the picture of
relgiious motif and should be dated Meiji 15(1,882) drawn by Subun Ono who was a great artist from late Edo early 1,900s.
This is the story of one of the greatest buddhist monk,Shinran forcused on origins of temples and places related to Shinran and historical incidents and interestingly, all are woodblock printed in full colors.
Shinran(1,173-1,262) was a pupil of Honen and the founder of what ultimately became the Jodo Shinshu sect in Japan.
Here is more information of Shinran.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinran
Shinran has a posthumous name,Kenshin-taishi as it is written as a title and it is an honorary name given to royalty, nobles, and sometimes others, and after the person's death. Every story is in the nice square frames and there are 45 stories. It comes in an original wooden box.
Please enjoy all details on more pictures.
Being rolled up frequently, the rims between papers are coming off(not torn, individual papers are separated,so just can be glued) and the back of papers are getting thin(no holes),and the side on the box is missing and
there are slight patina, and some ink marks, but considering its age,it is in really in good condition.
This fantatstic religious art will be the best wall decoration for sure, also the best way to learn Japanese culture!
