This is a woodblock printed book of Kyoto Gion Kodai Yamahoko dated around 1,920s. The Kyoto Gion Festival is one of Japan's three major festivals originated during the Heian period (794-1192). In around the fifteenth century, floats called yamahoko first appeared in the festival. The floats represented each district and were paraded around Kyoto. Yama are smaller floats featuring historical or mythical figures. Hoko are floats on large two-meter wheels, some two stories high, with tall spears protruding toward the sky. There are 34 different yamahoko with names and districts and all are just so interesting.First page is a index and first yamahoko is one of the most famous one,Naginata, Japanese halberd on top. Please enjoy all details on more pictures. Due to age, outside cover has some flaws, and there are some patina, stains and a few rims of prints are slightly torn and connected folded pages are are getting separated, but as a whole it is in very good condition.
