These are original woodblock printed pictures of kabuki actors dated Bunkyu 4(1864) done by 3rd Toyokuni Utagawa(1786-1864).He was the most popular, prolific and financially successful artist of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century,and following the traditional pattern of the Utagawa school, his main occupation was kabuki and actor prints;therefore, this is a supreme piece. It is an originally complete series of Kabuki actor's portrait classified in Yago(where actors take on a name relating to their guild),and has a Toyokuni's stamp on the bottom, his age 78 to 79,the gourd shaped stamp said Hirokou is the person who carved, and small rounded stamp is a passed inspection because some pictures were satirical and critical, regulations were strengthened which lasted about 86 years from 1791. There are are self-introductions of each actors next to pictures and the name of roles and names are written in the square boxes and they are Arashi and Nakamura families. All have great hairs, wonderful patterns on kimonos,AND different facial expressions are really amazing! The back is yellowish from one of the natural resin used for painting which are eventually no longer used. The technique he used for actor's pictures was to make faces really large. This is Chu-gao(simply means middle face),but obviously, faces are much larger than body.In order to complete this, probably printed at least 40 times and every sharp lines, details and colors are fabulous only because it is first printed original piece!PLEASE enjoy and adore all details on more pictures! Some backings are attached on the back which are done probably early 1,900s.(it might be possible to take it off since the backing is done by profesional),and there are some stains from being rubbed by another sheets, slight wrinkles, pin hole around the rims and some flaws around the rims, but considering nearly 150 years old, this is extremely good condition. This definitly something you would like to add to your collections! |
