This is a hibachi,hand warmer dated around 1,930.It is made of one solid kiri (paulownia)wood.This kinds of hibachi is called Dou-maru which is named after the shape of armor and it means big trunk.
It has squat, globular form, with attractive graining and good patina to the copper liner inside.Interestingly,it has field peas done with beautiful makie techinqiues and mother-of-pearls on the leave give great charm to it.
Wonderful vine grow from the bottom and extend out and nice field peas are hunging down.Some areas are coated with Nashiji which is transparent and yellowish and is prepared by mixing gamboge or gardenia pods with transparent urushi of good quality.
All are drawn by hand beautifully,so please enjoy all details on more pictures.
It has some scratches,and copper is rusty and ashy,also some mother-of-pearls,some colors of pictures,piece of one of the field pea drawn by hand came off and since it is made of solid wood,there is a slight split on top around the rim,but considering its age, it is in a great condition.
This motif is really unqiue and will be perfect planter for your home! |
