This is a Bontei,or bonseki set which comes in Bontei-tansu dated around mid.1,900s.It is the creation of miniature landscapes on rectangular or oval black lacquer trays. It is made primarily of sand and stone, pebbles, and bonseki sceneries are like three dimensional paintings that seem to mysteriously pulse with the movements of nature and carry both artist and viewer into an inner depth that belies expression which started around over 560 years ago. There are various tools used for different purposes. There are a sieve of large mesh to fine mesh to design oceans and mountains and every small tools are used all natural world.9 drawers contain beautiful different size and roughness sands and rocks. This tansu istself is finely made with perfect joineries by Sou-kiri,all paulownia which is ideal to store various items because of the best breathability and durabllity.Inside of tansu are divided by darker woods with charming pulls. This is a site which explains about Bonseki and tools in English. http://www.ne.jp/asahi/noar/seiyu/emenu.htm Originally, they should have been some feathers to make waves, but this does not come with them and 4 knobs on the drawers are missgins,so you need to open them with a piece of wood sticking into the holes(The lowerest drawer needs to lift,so it automatically slide out) and some knobs are easy to come off, also some material of mesh are getting thin and have some holes and some tools are rusty due to material, and there are some scratches and stains, and paulownia case has splits, but as a whole it is in very good condition. Representative examples of Karasansui(rocks and sand, with the sea symbolized not by water but by sand raked in patterns that suggest rippling water)are in the gardens of Ryoanji Temple and Daitokuji Temple, both in Kyoto and you might be able to make similar one in your house, and the best part of it is that you will get the best meditation while making it and after making it for sure! Material;Stone,Sand,Paulownia,Others |
