This is a rare Houi-Jisyaku, bearing angle mostly used for navigation during late Edo era(1860's-).During sailing, only the guide sailor could have was the North Star which was called(Ne-no-hoshi)originally means the Rat,the first of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac, and it also means`North' in bearing. The red Kanji on the compass with circle next to it is `ne' and diagonal word means horse, and there is South written above it and other sides have west and east.Every word is carved carefully and made with high details. It is made out of one wood and there are handsome writing carved on the bottom. Please enjoy all details on more pictures.
Unfortunately, due to age and use, iron got rusty and inside metal which supposed to point north came off,and some coatings came off around the kanji writings and there are some scratches and stains, but it is still such a handsome piece which only antiques can have!
It is not functioning as magnetic bearing, but you might be the one who can give a life to it!? or this just will be beautiful accent piece for your home!
