The is a Sanjuno-tou from Yakushi-ji dated Showa 55(1,890).
Yakushi-ji is one of the famous imperial and ancient Buddhist temples located in Nara.
This has a writing Hyakumantou(the One Million Pagodas and Dharani Prayers) on the bottom of pagodas.
Origin of making this is that empress Shotoku of Japan hoping to restore peace to Japan, had one million miniature wooden pagodas made putting sutra inside and distributed to 10 temples as offering, but now, only 40,000 left in Horyuji.
This is not original, and no sutra inside, but it is a beautiful Hyakumantou carved with fine wood and it is made as Kuyou, holding a buddhism memorial service toward their ancestors,so there are names and this person's information on the bottom.
Because this is from Yakushiji, one of 10 temples,
it has a stamp on the bottom and original wooden box, also it is signed on the wooden box.
Please enjoy all details on more pictures.
There are some holes on the wooden box,but pagoda itself is in perfect condition.
This grat architectural religious piece will be wonderful home decor!
