This is a sumi-tsubo,a reel to draw a line on timber used by carpenter dated mid.1,900's.
This contains some kind of material which is soaked in ink,and a thread from the wheel go thr.it,absorb the ink,then comes out from the small hole on the one end.Pulling the thread on the timber, flicking it on the place where he wants to mark,the ink can be transfered to the timber,leaves the marks.It is so amazing that this simple tool have various functions.Old days,carpenters made own sumi-tsubo and competed each other during their breaks;therefore,sumi tsubo is one of a kind and is only tool which is made by wood among their tools, and are very decorative.This has gentle carving and nice opening on sides and crescent-shaped cut-out in the middle on gorgeous wooden grain which is incredibly smooth.Originally, there shoule be some pin called Kariko attached at the end of thead to pull easier,but this does not come with it,and wheel is gone,also there are some scratches,slight chips around the rims, and ink marks due to use,but as a whole it is in very good condition.
