This is a high-end wooden Ko-zutsu or Senko-zutsu,cylindrical case for stick of incense used for Sencha dated Meiji era(around 1,900s).In 1740, Soen Nagatani developed Japanese sencha which is an unfermented form of green tea. To prepare sencha, tea leaves are first steam-pressed, then rolled and dried into a loose tea and the dried leaves are then ground and mixed with hot water to yield the final drink. Sencha is now one of Japan's mainstay teas.It is common to burn stick instead of incense during Sencha.
Ko-zutsu is not only used as a case, but also displayed in an alcove,so it is really finely made. This cylindrical case in such a unusal size is made of probably bamboo and top and cover are made of refined rosewood. This cover has a design of Reishi(mushroom).Reishi is considered to be one of the elegant flower among 4 in China and known as auspicious motif such as a longevity and lucky omen.It has wonderful textures of mushroom on top and sides and decorated with white drawing. The long case is fully covered with breath taking carvings done by high skills carefully having perfect harmony together. The peonies which is also one of the sophisticated flower and waves and small flowers are decorated between peonies and both flowers have been favorable motifs in Sencha for a long time. Please enjoy this piece of art on more pictures.
It still has some sticks inside and it shows how Mo-dutsu is used.
Here below shows how sencha ceremony goes.
