This is a kanban(shop sign) dated around early 1,900s.This was used to hang outside of Geta(wooden clogs)store.Original design of kanban should be the shape of items which merchansts are selling,and both sides have designs in gaiantic figure to be noticed from far,but eventually,kanban became just letters on boards.The geta is an elevated wooden base held onto the foot with a fabric thong;therefore,there are large 3 holes on the front and 2 thick woods(called Ha,simply means teeth) attached on the bottom.
The back is nicely carved with wonderful wooden grain(should be very hard wood,might be cedar) throughout and all are made just like a real geta!

Exposed outside as a sign for ages, there are stains,scratches,cracks due to material,also original thongs are no longer attached and these are obi-jime, but as a whole it is in very good condition considering its age.
This will be outstanding stool,stand at your entrance,garden,or just fantastic coversational piece
