This is a hagoita,battledore dated around 1,960s.
One traditional New Year pastime is hanetsuki, a badminton-like game played by girls with wooden paddles and a shuttlecock. In olden times, the person who missed had a mark drawn on her face with black ink, and they played until one player's face was completely smeared in ink.
Hagoita is the wooden paddle used in this game, and it's usually decorated with beautiful drawings and the paddle itself is valued as an ornament that is believed to bring good luck.Traditional hagoita commonly feature portraits of famous kabuki actors such as it is shown on this.
This battledore with hand painted picture on one side has a kabuki player. This painting is a role for a main good guy.He has strong eyebrows, light bears, black lines under his eyes which give very strong impression.
He holds a sword from his shoulder, wears a straw coat. He lowers his lips a little, turn his head to the right slightly. He ties his hair in samurai style and there are a few hairs touching his face per and all are drawn in full details.
The back is also designed with traditional patterns such as picture of charming sparrows in the bamboo bush and stamped and signed in the front. There are some patinas, and some corneres and hems got darken, have some stains, small holes, but as a whole it is in very good condition. This will be such an eye catching art for sure!
