This is a lithographed Hikifuda(handbill) dated around early 1,900s.Hikiduda is a small handbill used to advertise shops and products.This custom started during the middle of Edo era and designs bacame very elaborated.This has motif of Bunmei-kaika.Meiji era was a turning point in the history of the Japan of the Shoguns which means the need to open its borders and adopt western models in order to modernize the country and enable it to compete with modern industrialized nations.This assimilation of western models influenced almost all spheres of life in Japan: politics, economics, army, mores, social life, and of course, culture were testing fields for what the government called bunmei kaika (civilization and enlightenment). Because of this movement,many arts are influenced by it.These people are in wetern clothes,has a stick,checked jacket,cape aorund the sholders.The picture on the back is ornated with artistic frames,on the contrary,there is the most traditional scenery,Mt. Fuji in the clouds and has a Haiku(Japanese poem consisting of seventeen syllables) next to it.The scenery looks like continuous from the frame to the bottom which has trees and lake behind people.
There are some patinas on the white areas,and small paper is attached on the back around the corner,also some hems are slightly torn,but pictures themselves are in good condition.
This will add a great charm to your empty wall for sure!
