This is a set of 3Hotei Fushimi Tsuchiningyoo,Clay Dolls from Fushimi in Kyoto from late Showa(1950's-).This painted dolls made of unglazed pottery that were sold in front of the gate to Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine around the 16th century, starting at the end of the Momoyama period.There are various types of dolls: some are painted in brilliant colors, others are finished in lighter colors to allow the character of the clay to show through.The fugure is hotei,eccentric Zen priest of the late Tang dynasty in China. He walked around to collect offering with a huge bag while showing a big belly and slept in the snow. He was considered a reincarnation of Miroku Bosatsu and included among 18 rakan and 7 fortune gods (shichifukujin) as a god of abundance. Buying larger hotei on New years to worship every year for 7 years and place in alter around kitchen at home,it becomes 7 hoteis which means 7 gods,that is a reson why it comes in different sizes which symbolizes the safety of my family and good health.This smiles happily folding a fan said'luck'.Please enjoy all details on more pictures.
