This is a woodblock printed picture from one of a scenery from Kabuki (Tsumorukoi,yukino-to which means piles of loves, door to snow world(?)dated Meiji 12(1879) by original Kuniyoshi(1798 - 1861),one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print or ukiyo-e. Originally, this should consist of 3 sheets;howeverr due to age, many original woodblock prints don't come with 3 anymore. This print is called'shikake' which simply means`devise'.During a real kabuki play, the situation changed with dizzying speed and actors changes faces and costumes. In this print, it shows an old man face, and flipping his face open,a young man appears. His face is perfectly painted, clenching his teeth, and all are done in full details. This story is about plot and illusion taken place under the sakura just like snow falling. The title, year, names of actor, and various names of artists are written above picture. This is another prints from Toyokuni and middle is the same theme. http://www2.ntj.jac.go.jp/dglib/edc_dic/dictionary/dic_ta/dic_ta_34.html Some colors around the hems are fading, and there are minor patinas, but considering the age, this is in a very good condition. This print with interesting trick is so unique and perfect to add to your antique collections! |
