This is a Hanki or Meshi-tugi which is lidded wooden container to keep rice warm coated on urushi dated mid.Showa(1960's).This is used at the end of Cha-kaiseki which is simple meal before taking the (traditional powdered) tea to stay your stomach as warm as having a warmed stone in your bosom and this manner was established about 500 years ago by Sen-no rikyu(1522-1591).The rice is served at the end of meal and allowed to refill only 2 times(more than 2 bowls is considered as a bad manner!) Every piece is made of really thick wood out of one solid wood and have fabulous urushi glow.Fine shape is made with lines of carving which show fabulous texture throughout and the cover has charming handle sitting on top with very intieresting designs around.It has some scratches,chips specially around the hems,but as a whole it is in very good condition. This charming container will be excellent planter or for a wine bottle (need to put another container inside) or sweets,you name it!
