This is a vintage 8 urushi bowl set, made of wood. It has mervelous peony motif which is lacquered in gold, 'makie' dated Meiji 41(1908).Inside of bowls has a pair of butterfly flying.The peony is in full blossom and a butterfly is approching above.The design on top is continuous pattern of bottom.Peony symbolizes wealthy and highly placed and started to be used a lot from Maiji era(1868-1912). Urusi coating and drawing are done by hand so that it is not perfectly even and same,but they are so equisite and gold looks so fabulous on black glow.It comes in an original wooden box.There a few flaws around the hem and slight scratches but as a whole it is in very good condition. This set will be a fantastic addition to your home colloctions!
