Lacquerware
Shikki(lacquereware) is craftwork coated with lacquer on wood and bamboo. It has a history of over 6,000 years excavated the ruins of combs,tablewares.Old days,it was used in daily life because of its strength against humidity and heat and outstanding durability.The Edo period (1600-1868) provided a backdrop for great development in Japanese lacquer and took on an indication of social status for the aristocratic. Each region in Japan has its own special products which eloquently reflect the local setting and nature of the people and today, there are many lacquer producing areas all over Japan. Wajima lacquering of Ishikawa prefecture, Negoro lacquering of Wakayama, Tsugaru lacquering of Aomori and Aizu lacquering of Fukushima are some of the known lacquerware which are introduced to the world.
